Ask Tyler Perry how he achieved success and he will tell you that the pain he suffered as an abused child and the heartache he has experienced, fueled his creativity, determination, and faith. The man who was once homeless and sleeping in his car not so long ago, is now the famous writer, director, and actor who is the creative force behind 22 movies, 20 plays, and eight TV shows.
Most notably he has just changed the Hollywood game by building a 330-acre movie studio complex in Atlanta. This is the first-ever black-owned movie studio in history. So while we clap and celebrate this milestone for Tyler Perry, let's take a second to see what lessons we have been taught.
They say success leaves clues and Tyler Perry's rise to success has provided some of the greatest lessons that entrepreneurs can learn. Here are 5 in a nutshell:
1. Do not accept "NO" for an Answer!
Along your journey, everybody will not recognize your gifts and talents. Doors that you believe should be opened to you may sometimes be closed (or even slammed) in your face. Find new opportunities, develop a new strategy and master your craft but never ever quit based on someone else's opinion.
2. Build Your Own Table!
No matter how great you are, there are some that will refuse to sit with you or acknowledge your gifts and talents. Do not let that deter you, simply build your own platform. Tyler himself has stated that even today, he feels Hollywood refuses to acknowledge his accomplishments. Rather than waiting for others to "let him in" so to speak, he turned around and built his own table to feed others.
3. Check Your Surroundings!
You must not only surround yourself with those on the same mission as you, but you must also surround yourself with those who have gone before you. Tyler made a conscious effort to soak up the knowledge in every room he was blessed to be in attendance. He took no opportunity for granted and realized that in order to be the teacher, he must first become the student.
4. Give Back!
Tyler has not only opened doors for others to come after him. He has become the hope for so many who for years had been turned away from Hollywood and the film industry because they didn't look a certain way, know a certain crowd or have a certain amount of money (the usual requirements for success in Hollywood).
5. Your Current Situation is not your Final Destination!
I'm sure if you told Tyler while he was homeless and sleeping in his car that he was going to be one of the richest men in the world who would impact lives globally, he probably would have thought you were joking and laughed himself back to sleep but his journey is a reflection of what pushing past your challenges, keeping the faith and believing in yourself can do.
If you are an entrepreneur, the journey will not be easy but if you learn from the greatest along the way, the road to success gets easier!
